Arenas intersperses his text with quotatiojns from the real Reijaldo Servanto’s diary and other documents, though the veracity of the Cuban author’s own contributions is not quite at the same level.

Almost half the novel is set in various prisons where Fray Servando Theresa de Mier is imprisoned and from which he escapes or is freed. If God were here He would have aluicnante mad. It reminds of Cortazar’s style. He was able to collect enough paper this way to continue his writing.

Reinaldo Arenas’s The Ill-Fated Peregrinations of Fray Servando is a picaresque novel about the real-life Mexican friar who is persecuted for his religious opinions and hatred of the Spanish monarchy and episcopate.
